Case Studies & Tutorials

These case studies and tutorials have been provided by GlobWave users to demonstrate the range of applications GlobWave data can be used for.

The case studies shows the range of applications that GlobWave data has been used for whereas the tutorials can be used to by anyone to make themselves more familiar with the various processing procedures that can be applied to the data.

Using GlobWave data to study piracy

A 2011 study by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) used GlobWave data to examine the climatic factors affecting piracy in the Indian Ocean. Due to the security problems in the region, no in situ measurements were possible, meaning GlobWave data was uniquely placed to provide the regular, accurate and historic wind and wave height information needed.

Using GlobWave to search for global storm peaks

A recent study by Oceanweather Inc used GlobWave altimeter data to scan for global occurrences of storm peaks, where significant wave height exceeds 12 m.

How to access and display GlobWave NRT data

Murray Brown from the UNESCO/IOC Intergovernmental Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange's (IODE) OceanTeacher program has developed an online tutorial using GlobWave data. The lesson teaches users how to access the GlobWave portal and download Near Real Time (NRT) ENVISAT and JASON 1&2Altimeter data, open the netCDF files using the Integrated Data Viewer and display multiple datasets of altimeter point data with a range of visualisations.

Using GlobWave data to validate regional wind and wave models

HR Wallingford

This case study, written by Laure Grignon, describes how HR Wallingford used GlobWave data to validate regional wind and wave models.

Using GlobWave L2P data for wave hindcast assessments in the Gulf of Mexico

Christian Appendini from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Victor Camacho from Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán have created the following MATLAB tutorial for performing a wave hindcast analysis of wave models in the Gulf of Mexico using GlobWave L2P satellite data.

The tutorial script and the MATLAB code are both available for download.

Validation of global WAVEWATCH III hindcasts using merged altimeter data

This case study describes how merged altimeter data was used to evaluate the global hindcasting of the WAVEWATCH III ™ model. In total 4 hindcast models were run to allow different combinations of wind forcing fields and parameterizations of physical processes (Source Term) packages. This case study was undertaken by David Wang and Erick Rogers from the Navy Research Laboratory Oceanography Division, US Navy.
