September 2009

This is the project summary covering progress in September 2009. Work this month has continued to focus on the development of the GlobWave system.

Work has continued on the construction of the in situ database. It involves interpreting data in many different formats and meta-data standards and much care needs to be taken that it is all dealt with consistently and correctly along with any relevant QC checks. Collaboration has taken place with the relevant in situ data providers where necessary. With regard to the Altimeter data, the processing algorithms for converting from L2 to L2P format are complete for ERS1, ERS2, Envisat, GFO, TOPEX/POSEIDON and Jason-1. The SAR processing algorithms are still under construction for ERS1, ERS2 and Envisat. With regards to the Spatial WFVS, experiments have been performed with the ingestion, analysis and storage of spectral data from the providers with excellent results. The current NOCS systems are able to process 15 million spectra per hour. GlobWave was presented at the OceanSAR meeting in Herrsching, Germany on 8th September and Geoff Busswell met many potential users during the conference. Also, an abstract was submitted for an oral presentation at the SeaSAR conference at ESRIN in January, 2010. Finally, Logica has discussed the plans for the User Consultation Meeting with the organisers of WISE. It has been agreed that the final day of WISE can be shared with GlobWave, with the next morning of talks specific to GlobWave and involving users with commercial interests in wave data.
