ESPEN was a pilot project designed to provide wave measurements and forecasting information with specific applications to Hellenic navigation.
The project provided reliable short term forecasting of the sea state as well as near real time information from the use of in situ buoys. In addition, it provided information regarding the safety and operability of ships in the forecasted sailing regions. It is expected to realise tangible benefits regarding the safety of sea transport and the optimisation and improvement of designs of ships, boats and other sea vessels.
ESPEN was co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the General Secretariat of Research and Development (Ministry of Development for Greece). The project was coordinated by HCMR and had a duration of 4 years, which was concluded in September 2007.
